Historical Context

In February 1966 Milton Obote suspended Uganda’s constitution, ordered troops to attack Kabaka Mutesa II’s palace and later, under the 1967 constitution, abolished all traditional kingdoms, ending Buganda’s autonomy. Decades later President Yoweri Museveni and his son General Muhoozi Kainerugaba funded the Babiito clan’s coronation of Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, reviving a royal tradition that Obote had dismantled.
