History

Historical Context

On 16 December 2012 the gang-rape of Jyoti Singh—known as Nirbhaya—triggered protests and led the government to create the Verma Committee, which reviewed over 80,000 suggestions and helped pass the 2013 Criminal Law Amendment Act and six fast-track courts. The case produced the only conviction among 706 Delhi rape filings that year, spurring demand for safer campuses, echoed today by a Delhi University march.
