History

Historical Context

The 1986 Anita Cobby murder, a brutal home invasion in Sydney that shocked Australia, resulted in five perpetrators receiving 25-year sentences. New South Wales Police documented that the crime involved a $1.5 million ransom demand and the victim’s body was discovered in a suburban garage. Today's arrests of three men targeting women in Arncliffe and Bankstown, alongside Victoria’s cartel-linked murder of Marco Tapia, echo Cobby’s pattern of intruders exploiting vulnerability. These parallels prompt intensified inter-state task forces and legislative reviews to tighten home-security statutes, aiming to deter similar assaults nationwide.
