History

Historical Context

In April 1981 NASA launched Columbia on STS-1, the first U.S. reusable crewed spacecraft, completing a 54-hour flight that orbited Earth 37 times and marked the first American crewed launch since the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. Decades later SpaceX’s Dragon “Grace” mission built on that reusable-launch legacy, demonstrating rapid crew turnaround and expanding commercial-government partnerships for diverse crews.
