Historical Context

Indira Gandhi’s 21-month Emergency (25 June 1975 – 21 March 1977) suspended civil liberties and jailed opposition leaders. When elections were held in March 1977, the Janata coalition—including Congress (O) and the Jana Sangh—won 298 Lok Sabha seats, delivering India’s first non-Congress government under Morarji Desai. That unified defeat of authoritarian rule is echoed today as Rahul Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee’s INDIA bloc meets to coordinate protests.
