Operation Korag Neutralises Last Member of the Pir Panjal Module

On September 30, 2026 (some reports state September 29, 2026), Indian Army’s Chinar Corps, Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force conducted a joint search in the Korag-Yousmarg area of Budgam district. Troops engaged suspects who opened fire, killing Mohammad Asif, alias Hashim Moosa (also known as Fauzi Musa or Asif Fauji). His body and weapons were recovered from the Palmaidan area.

Background of the Pir Panjal Terror Module

Intelligence agencies trace the four-member LeT cell to a family in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The group—Mohammad Asif (Hashim Moosa), Junaid Ramzan Bhat, Yasir (Abu Talha) and Suleiman Shah—entered India via the Samba-Kathua route in 2023 and moved through the Pir Panjal range into South Kashmir, living in temporary hideouts and receiving supplies from local over-ground workers.

Attack Footprint of the Four-Member Group

  • August 4, 2023 – Halan (Kulgam) ambush, four Army personnel killed.
  • December 21, 2023 – Attack on Army vehicles in Poonch, five jawans killed.
  • May 4, 2024 – Indian Air Force convoy attack in Shastar, Poonch; one airman killed, five injured.
  • June 9, 2024 – Bus carrying pilgrims to Shiv Khori (Reasi) attacked; nine civilians killed, 43 injured.
  • April 22, 2025 – Pahalgam Baisaran massacre, 26 civilians shot dead.

Conflicting Reports & Gaps

  • Date of the encounter: The Indian Army and several outlets (Indiatimes, Indiatoday, The Hindu) record the killing on September 30, 2026, whereas News18 and some PTI-based statements cite September 29, 2026. Both dates appear in official updates.
  • Exact role in the Pahalgam attack: Moosa is named among the masterminds, but the National Investigation Agency’s chargesheet lists other LeT operatives and handler Sajid Jatt as primary conspirators. Moosa’s precise operational responsibility remains unproven in the public record.

Why It Matters

Moosa’s death removes the last publicly identified senior field commander of the Pir Panjal network, which had sustained LeT’s ability to conduct ambushes across the Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch belt and the Kashmir Valley for nearly three years. Security officials say the loss creates a “major field-level leadership vacuum” and hampers the group’s capacity to plan coordinated attacks. The operation also highlights the effectiveness of multi-agency intelligence sharing—technical surveillance, human sources and coordinated ground searches—in terrain that previously allowed militants to evade capture.

Verbatim Quotes

  • “I want to thank the Army and all the intelligence forces working on this. I request you to continue this operation and eliminate all the terrorists in this country until the last terrorist is eliminated.” — Asavari Jagdale, daughter of Pahalgam attack victim Santosh Jagdale
