Background and Career
Admiral Ben Key joined the Royal Navy in 1984 as a university cadet, later qualifying as helicopter aircrew and a principal warfare officer. Over a 41-year career he commanded vessels such as HMS Iron Duke and HMS Illustrious, served in Kosovo and the Iraq War, and led Operation Pitting in 2021. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (Commander of the British Empire (CBE)) in 2016 and a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in the 2021 New Year Honours. From 2021 until May 2025 he served as First Sea Lord, the senior professional head of the Royal Navy.
Investigation and Outcome
Key was suspended in May 2025 after a complaint alleged an affair with a junior female officer, breaching the Navy’s “service test” that forbids sexual relationships between commanders and subordinates. The MoD confirmed he will retain his pension. The case marks the first time a First Sea Lord has had his service terminated in the Royal Navy’s 500-year history.
Official Statements & Responses
Defence Secretary John Healey and Vice Chief of the Defence Staff General Dame Sharon Nesmith were cited as insisting on a full investigation.
