Ajax and Scarborough Arsons Linked to One Suspect
By Drooid · · How we work
Incident Overview
In late August, a vacant house in Ajax, Ontario, was set ablaze, destroying the structure and causing serious damage to adjacent homes. Police reported that several neighboring residences were doused with an accelerant but did not ignite, and that occupants of one nearby home escaped safely. A separate fire on August 27 targeted the Toronto home of Liberal MP Salma Zahid; both her vehicle and a neighboring tenant’s car were set on fire.
Investigation and Charges
A joint investigation by the Toronto Police Service and the Durham Regional Police Service identified 24-year-old Roshvin Crofton of Ajax as the suspect in both incidents. He was arrested in early September and faces a total of 14 charges, including break-and-enter, possession of property obtained by crime, multiple counts of arson, mischief damage to property, and breach of probation. The charges have not yet been tested in court. Police also disclosed that a second suspect remains at large in connection with the August 27 arson. Additionally, investigators are seeking information about a black 2025 Hyundai Sonata believed to have been involved in the events surrounding the August 27 fire.
Official Responses
The office of MP Salma Zahid confirmed that her car and a neighboring tenant’s vehicle were ignited on August 27 and that the incident is being treated as arson. Both the Toronto Police Service and the Durham Regional Police Service have urged anyone with information to contact police or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
Potential Impact
If convicted, Crofton could face significant custodial sentences given the breadth of the charges and the extent of property damage. The case underscores heightened concerns about targeted arson attacks on private residences and the safety of occupants in densely populated suburban areas. Ongoing investigations aim to locate the second suspect and recover the missing Hyundai Sonata, while authorities continue to assess the broader threat posed by coordinated arson attempts.
