History

Historical Context

On 30 April 1980 six DRFLA gunmen seized the Iranian embassy in London, taking 26 hostages. After five terrorists were killed, the SAS’s Operation Nimrod rescued the survivors, a raid that vaulted the unit’s profile and reinforced Margaret Thatcher’s hard-line anti-terror stance, prompting stricter UK counter-terror laws still cited after today’s RAF Fairford arrests.
