Fatal Desert Hike Claims Two Lives
On July 18, rescue teams in the mountainous Wadi Naqab region of the United Arab Emirates recovered the bodies of Cassius Newton, 34, and his friend Aran Martinson after the pair failed to return from a planned hike. Both men had departed from their vehicle in the early morning, despite pleas from their wives to postpone the outing because of extreme heat.
Individuals Involved
Cassius Newton was the son of former Chelsea midfielder Eddie Newton. He and Martinson, a father of three from Bishop’s Stortford, met while working for a global company and lived in the resort town of Ras Al Khaimah, north-east of Dubai. Eddie Newton travelled to the UAE to identify his son’s body, while Martinson’s wife later posted an online tribute describing him as “incredibly driven, hardworking and ambitious.”
Coroner Findings
She noted that the men’s wives had warned them about the heat, lack of sleep, and insufficient phone charge. Medical evidence linked the fatalities to severely elevated body temperatures that caused organ failure.
Data & Conditions
Temperatures at the time of the hike reached approximately 40 °C, with the canyon environment making conditions feel hotter. The two bodies were found lying on their backs amid large rocks, roughly three to four kilometres from the parked vehicle and about 350 metres apart. The route was classified as a recreational hike requiring no specialist equipment and was expected to take around four hours.
