History

Historical Context

When the WNBA launched its inaugural season on June 21, 1997, the Houston Comets captured the first championship, establishing professional women's basketball. Cynthia Cooper averaged 22.3 points per game that season, leading the Comets to a 33-9 regular-season record and a 3-0 playoff sweep. Similarly, A'ja Wilson’s technical foul and fan heckling mirror the 1998 New York Liberty fan-ejection, prompting codes for the Las Vegas Aces, Indiana Fever, and Becky Hammon. That precedent now forces the WNBA to tighten disciplinary rules, balancing player accountability with fan behavior to protect the league’s credibility.
