History

Historical Context

On Dec 8 1987, Flyers goalie Ron Hextall became the NHL’s first goaltender to score by shooting into an empty net, a milestone that opened a niche for goalie goals. By 2024 only 21 goalies—including Rangers’ Igor Shesterkin, the league’s 18th scorer—have netted a goal, turning a rare feat into a marketing asset for teams like the New York Rangers.
