Border clashes that began in May 1998 between Ethiopia and Eritrea escalated into a war that killed roughly 70,000 people and ended with a June 2000 cease-fire, followed by the December 2000 Algiers peace accord and a UN-mandated Temporary Security Zone patrolled by UNMEE from July 2000 until its withdrawal in July 2008.
