History

Historical Context

In the 1991 Gulf War the United States fired 288 Tomahawk cruise missiles, the first large-scale combat use of long-range precision weapons. Ukraine’s 2024 debut of a home-grown cruise missile follows that precedent, as regional tensions in Europe make stand-off strike capability a key factor in power calculations for both defense planners.
