History

Historical Context

After Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990, the United States and Saudi Arabia launched Operation Desert Shield, gathering about 543,000 coalition troops and driving Iraqi forces out in the 1991 Gulf War. The U.S. kept a base in Saudi Arabia, creating a precedent of US-backed actions to safeguard Gulf oil routes— a precedent echoed today as Saudi forces plan an offensive against Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
