History

Historical Context

In 1985 comedy writer Richard Curtis and comedian Lenny Henry founded Comic Relief to channel BBC comedy into aid for the 1983-85 Ethiopian famine. The first Red Nose Day telecast in 1988 drew 30 million viewers and raised more than £15 million, establishing a charity-television model. Today’s Celebrity Traitors uses the same BBC-backed format, offering £100,000 prizes for charitable causes.
