Bagent disclosed concussion symptoms and sat out after his agent advised prioritizing health.

Bagent entered the league as an undrafted rookie from Division II Shepherd University in 2023.
Coach Ben Johnson concealed the Week 4 quarterback starter, citing NFL rules that omit depth-chart updates.

History

Historical Context

After Congress hearings in 2009 prompted a revamped concussion policy, the NFL reached a $765 million settlement in August 2013, mandating a four-stage protocol; the issue was highlighted by neurologist Bennet Omalu. Subsequent rule changes—such as the 2010 kickoff shift and 2016 fines—have embedded the protocol into today’s roster moves, like the Bears’ handling of rookie Tyson Bagent.
