History

Historical Context

The 1970 NFL–AFL merger, finalized in 1970, unified rival leagues into a single 26-team organization. The agreement secured a $3 million television contract, and owners such as Al Davis of the Oakland Raiders negotiated revenue shares. Jeff Van Note’s 18-year, 225-game career with the Atlanta Falcons echoes the post-merger emphasis on franchise stability, similar to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ dynasty under coach Chuck Noll in the 1970s. That legacy of durability continues to shape team honor programs, prompting owners like Arthur M. Blank to celebrate long-serving players as cultural icons.
