Historical Context

After Diana’s death in August 1997, her funeral on 6 September at Westminster Abbey attracted an estimated 2 billion viewers and prompted Britain to fly the Union Flag at half-mast for the first time on a royal death. The ceremony altered public expectations of the monarchy, a legacy Charles III now draws on in his 2024 memorial service to ease William-Harry tensions and modernise royal protocol.
