Excludes serious offenders
- On Thursday 1 October 2026, 700 prisoners were released early from prisons in England and Wales.
- The 2026 Sentencing Act cuts custodial portions to one-third to ease overcrowding, excluding rapists, child-sex offenders and manslaughter convicts.
- The Ministry of Justice reported 87,499 inmates, 2 % up since 29 June; Alex Norris said the scheme prevents prisons reaching full capacity and that released prisoners remain on licence, are electronically tagged and can be recalled for breaches.
