History

Historical Context

When BBC’s “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” premiered in 1998, it shattered UK game-show ratings with a 15 million-viewer debut. The original format, devised by Celador founder Dan Olley, offered a £1 million top prize and sparked a £100 million surge in advertising revenue that year. Similarly, today’s “Celebrity Traitors” combines a £100,000 charity prize, high-stakes missions, and a record-breaking 8.9 million debut audience, echoing the earlier ratings battle. The precedent set by the 1998 phenomenon shows that televised celebrity competitions can generate massive viewership and charitable fundraising, prompting ITV and BBC to prioritize similar formats.
