Omani Pilot Suspected in Mid-Air Attack on Flydubai Flight to Tel Aviv

Incident Overview

A pilot is suspected of stabbing a fellow crew member aboard a Flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv that made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. The aircraft later continued to Ben Gurion Airport, where passengers were greeted by relatives on September 30. The suspect has been transferred to the United Arab Emirates to face a terrorism investigation.

Pilot Background and Employment History

The alleged assailant is an Omani citizen born in the United Arab Emirates to an Omani father and a Syrian mother. He spent several years living in the Emirates before joining Flydubai, where he worked for only eight months. Prior to that, he was employed by Royal Air Maroc, Morocco’s national carrier. According to a regional diplomatic source, he was removed from a training role at Oman Air last year after concerns emerged about his extremist views and was reassigned to a different position within the airline.

Investigation and Official Responses

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the suspect appears to have undergone “Islamist radical indoctrination.” An Israeli official confirmed the pilot’s identity and noted that multiple Israeli agencies—including Shin Bet, Mossad, the military and the Transportation Ministry—are investigating how an Omani citizen, from a country that does not recognize Israel, was placed on a flight to Tel Aviv. Flydubai declined to comment while the investigation remains ongoing. Oman Air, Royal Air Maroc and the Dubai Government Media Office have been contacted for comment but have not responded.

Security Implications

The incident raises questions about the adequacy of background-check procedures in the aviation sector, especially given Israel’s stringent security protocols for inbound flights. Analysts suggest that the case may prompt airlines and regulators to review vetting processes for crew members operating on routes to sensitive destinations.

Next Steps

UAE authorities are conducting a terrorism investigation, and the suspect’s legal status will be determined under Emirati law. Israeli agencies are expected to release further findings on how the pilot was cleared for the Tel Aviv-bound flight.
