History

Historical Context

When rugby union turned professional in 1995, the English Premiership introduced the bonus-point system that rewarded teams for scoring four tries. That season, Bath Rugby recorded 85 points over ten matches, while Exeter Chiefs, newly promoted, amassed a 12-point deficit, illustrating early impact of the rule. Today's 40-34 Bath victory, featuring Jaco Coetzee’s return, Finn Russell’s four conversions, and Stephen Varney’s yellow card, mirrors those early bonus-point incentives. The precedent shows that high-scoring, try-rich games continue to shape league standings, prompting clubs to prioritize attacking depth and disciplined defense.
