History

Historical Context

In the August-September 1965 Indo-Pak war, Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri launched a limited offensive that stopped Pakistan’s Kashmir push; India fielded twice as many tanks and used only 15% of its ammo while Pakistan expended about 80% and lost roughly 200 tanks. The UN cease-fire reinforced India’s resolve, influencing later reforms. On October 2, 2026, Narendra Modi’s ceremony recalled Shastri’s “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” ethos.
