History

Historical Context

During the Iran-Iraq “Tanker War,” Iraq’s attacks on Iranian and Kuwaiti tankers prompted Kuwait to request U.S. protection, leading to Operation Earnest Will on 24 July 1987. The U.S. Seventh Fleet re-flagged Kuwaiti vessels and escorted them with over 30 warships until 26 September 1988, sharply curbing Iranian strikes. The recent missile hit on the Kuwaiti-flagged VLCC MT Kazimah III revives that 1980s pattern of Gulf shipping threats.
