History

Historical Context

India’s 2008 National Biofuel Policy, which pledged 5 million tonnes of fuel by 2020 and INR10,000 crore for biogas, echoes earlier biofuel pushes such as the U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard introduced in 2005 and expanded by the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act, which offered up to $250 million loan guarantees for advanced biofuels. Both illustrate how incentives spur private projects like Reliance-ICAR pilots and Anant Ambani’s INR1 lakh crore venture.
