History

Historical Context

After Rajiv Gandhi’s 1991 assassination, Congress fragmented and lost the 1996 election. Sonia Gandhi joined in 1997, became president in 1998, and rebuilt regional blocs, leading to the 1999 campaign that raised the party to 114 Lok Sabha seats—the lowest since 1991. The 2026 appointments of Pargat Singh, Aradhana Misra and Sachin Pilot seek to repeat that unifying push before the 2027 state polls.
