History

Historical Context

After Rajiv Gandhi’s 1991 assassination, the Congress lost the 1996 election and fractured under President Sitaram Kesri. Sonia Gandhi joined in 1997, became president in 1998, and led the party for 22 years, guiding its 2004-2009 UPA comeback. In October 2026 the party appointed Aradhana Mishra in Uttar Pradesh and Pargat Singh in Punjab, echoing past regional-balance strategies.
