History

Historical Context

In 1949, the Constituent Assembly adopted India’s Constitution, proclaiming the nation a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic, and inclusive republic. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, chief draftsman, guided 2,400 proposed changes before finalizing the 395-article charter that took effect on 26 January 1950. Mohan Bhagwat’s claim at the 14th conference in Mumbai that dharma and rashtra are inseparable mirrors the Constitution’s aim to fuse heritage with civic governance. Consequently, courts and policymakers may revisit secular safeguards, while international bodies like UNESCO could scrutinize India’s cultural diplomacy amid rising global religious nationalism.
