History

Historical Context

When Britain transferred Hong Kong to China on 1 July 1997, the Basic Law enshrined a common-law system and an independent judiciary, creating the Court of Final Appeal as the highest court. Under the 50-year “one country, two systems” framework, the High Court continues to operate under the same legal standards, a legacy that underpins today’s nine-person jury trial of Alex Kwong and his family.
