History

Historical Context

In June 1975 Indira Gandhi invoked articles 352 and 356, declared a national Emergency and suspended civil liberties. Her government used MISA to detain 34,988 political leaders, including Jayaprakash Narayan, while police filed thousands of FIRs against protesters. The recent denial of a Janata rally at Shivaji Park and ensuing clash revives those Emergency-era tensions.
