History

Historical Context

The 15 April 1989 Hillsborough crush, which killed 97 fans, led Lord Justice Taylor’s 19 January 1990 report to replace fenced terraces with all-seater stadiums. The Newcastle Link Road crash, in which an 18-year-old driver injured ten spectators including a five-year-old, prompted New South Wales Police, Newcastle City Council and the Knights to reroute traffic and secure emergency corridors, echoing calls for stricter fan-separation policies.
