Historical Context

After a trophy-less 1997-98 campaign, Manchester United entered the 1998-99 season amid a £600 million BSkyB takeover bid and record signings of Jaap Stam and Dwight Yorke. Ferguson’s side then went on a 33-game unbeaten run, culminating in May 1999 with a historic treble that made United the first English club to win the Champions League since its 1992 rebranding.
