History

Historical Context

When the Women’s National Basketball Association launched in 1997, its inaugural game between the New York Liberty and Los Angeles Sparks drew 14,284 spectators. That season’s league-wide average attendance hovered around 7,000, yet the NBA’s endorsement and Lisa Leslie’s rookie debut signaled commercial viability. Today the Golden State Valkyries surpass those early figures, averaging over 18,000 fans per game as they clinch playoff series against the Dallas Wings. The rapid attendance growth mirrors the league’s early expansion momentum, suggesting sustained revenue streams and broader media contracts for future WNBA seasons.
