Meta Opens Muse to DIY Hardware with New “Muse Gadgets” Initiative

By Drooid · · How we work

Core Launch: Open-Source Hardware for the Muse Agent

Meta announced a new open-source program called Muse Gadgets that lets developers create custom hardware that interfaces with the company’s personal AI agent, Muse. The initiative supplies open-source firmware and a Linux software development kit (SDK), along with starter project ideas such as an e-ink display or an HDMI-stick that runs on a TV. Meta notes that hobbyist platforms like Raspberry Pi or ESP32 boards can be connected to Muse’s displays, buttons, sensors, actuators, or any other workbench components.

Development Resources and Community Support

To aid creators, Meta has published the firmware and SDK on public repositories and launched a Discord channel for troubleshooting and idea exchange. The company emphasizes that there are few technical limits, encouraging makers to experiment with a wide range of peripherals.

Muse Home Link: First Hardware Offering

Nat Friedman, head of product at Meta’s Superintelligence Labs, revealed that Meta has already built a prototype called Muse Home Link. The USB-C-powered device links Muse to a home network, enabling control of smart speakers, TVs, and other connected appliances. Meta produced 5,000 Home Link units and is distributing them for free to Muse subscribers while supplies last; Friedman indicated the devices would be ready to ship within a few weeks.

Strategic Context within Meta’s AI Push

The Muse Gadgets program follows Meta’s recent rollout of Muse for Small Business, a free-tier service that integrates Muse with platforms such as Shopify, Dropbox, and Slack. It also coincides with the formation of Meta Enterprise Platform, a business unit aimed at expanding the company’s AI tools for corporate customers. By opening Muse to hardware tinkering, Meta seeks to extend the agent beyond a standalone chatbot and embed it more deeply in both consumer and enterprise ecosystems.
