Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit could trigger that sanction, yet the federation has not commented.

History

Historical Context

The 1995 European Court of Justice Bosman ruling, sparked by Belgian midfielder Jean-Marc Bosman, abolished transfer fees for out-of-contract EU players and ended quotas on EU nationals. This opened the market, raising the share of foreign players in Europe’s top leagues from 23 % in 1990 to 71 % by 2025. Ronaldo’s challenge to Portugal’s six-month ban echoes the same clash between player freedom and national-team control.
