History

Historical Context

When Channel 4 aired the first British Big Brother on 18 July 2000, presenter Davina McCall guided ten housemates through a 64-day surveillance experiment created by John de Mol Jr., drawing an average 4.5 million viewers and over 40,000 applications. Its ratings surge established reality competition as a staple, paving the way for later high-stakes formats such as Claudia Winkleman’s Celebrity Traitors.
