History

Historical Context

The FA’s 1921 ban, justified by claims that football was unsuitable for women, halted the momentum built during the post-World I “first golden age” when matches like the 1920 Dick, Kerr Ladies game drew 53,000 spectators. When the FA lifted the ban in 1971, clubs such as Manchester United Women formed, paving the way for today’s Women’s Super League.
