History

Historical Context

After the NCAA imposed the first modern “death penalty” on SMU in 1987—cancelling the 1987 season, forcing a 1988 hiatus and stripping 55 scholarships—the Mustangs struggled for decades, only returning to bowl play in 2009. Compliance reforms and hires such as women’s soccer coach Nicole Nelson helped the program rebound, culminating in a 2024 win over Boston College.
