History

Historical Context

Operation Entebbe, the 1976 rescue of Air France Flight 139 hijacked to Entebbe, Uganda, ended with Israeli commandos freeing hostages. Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin approved the raid, which rescued 102 of 106 passengers and killed three hijackers and 45 Ugandan soldiers. Similarly, the 2026 Flydubai Flight FZ1073 hijacking saw passengers like Yaniv Hayoun restrain an Omani co-pilot, echoing civilian bravery at Entebbe. Both incidents underscore how hijack crises can amplify political narratives, prompting leaders such as Benjamin Netanyahu to leverage security events for electoral advantage.
