Moore Proposes Bridge

Alabama’s Interstate 10 Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project totals $3.2 billion, the state’s largest transportation effort.
Phase 1, a six-lane cable-stayed bridge, is fully funded and targeted for completion in 2031.
Phase 2 would replace the Bayway with an elevated interstate span, but it currently lacks funding.
Rep. Barry Moore proposed naming the bridge “Gateway to America U.S. President Donald Trump Bridge,” prompting criticism from former Sen. Doug Jones.

History

Historical Context

The practice of honoring presidents with major crossings dates to the 1931 opening of the George Washington Bridge, a $75 million, 14-lane span that now carries over 101 million vehicles annually. Alabama Rep. Barry Moore’s proposal to rename the I-10 Mobile River Bridge after Donald Trump has drawn criticism from former Sen. Doug Jones, echoing past partisan disputes over public monuments.
