History

Historical Context

In 2015, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2216, authorizing a Saudi-led coalition to restore Yemen’s internationally recognized government after the Houthis seized Sana’a. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman pledged $4.3 billion in coalition funding, while the United States supplied over 100 air-defense systems to the Houthis. Today, President Donald Trump’s refusal to expand U.S. strikes echoes the 2015 coalition’s engagement, while Iran-backed Houthi missiles threaten Red Sea shipping and deepen famine. The precedent underscores how partial international intervention fuels proxy warfare, risking broader Chinese and Russian naval presence and prolonging humanitarian collapse for millions.
