History

Historical Context

Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea sparked hybrid warfare, prompting Ukraine to harden bridges and rail links. The takeover slashed Crimea’s tourism by 50% in 2015 and cost Russia an estimated $30 billion over ten years, while NATO warned of freight disruptions. Today, Russian drones again target Kyiv’s bridges, reviving those 2014-era attacks and fueling renewed EU-US sanctions.
