Cooler Weather Set to Replace Autumn Warm Spell Across the UK

By Drooid · · How we work

Upcoming Temperature Drop and Rainfall

The BBC reports that daytime highs on Wednesday will range from 11 °C (52 °F) in northern Scotland to 17 °C (63 °F) in southern England, a marked decline from the recent week’s highs of up to 28 °C. If temperatures fail to reach 20 °C anywhere in the UK, it would be the first nationwide low since June 11, according to the forecast. Early mist and fog are expected in south Wales, the Midlands, East Anglia and southern England on Sunday, followed by sunny spells once the mist clears. Rainfall will be heaviest in western Scotland, with wind gusts of 40 mph or more in the far north-west, while northern and western England will see the strongest showers. Light rain and drizzle are forecast for Northern Ireland, and occasional thunderstorms may affect southern and south-eastern England on Tuesday night and Wednesday.

Recent Autumn Warmth

Met Office data cited by the BBC show that September was the joint-fourth warmest on record for the UK, with a mean temperature of 14.6 °C—1.6 °C above the long-term average. The season, now one-third through meteorological autumn, has therefore been warmer than normal so far.

Forecast Details and Weather Risks

A weather front is expected to move southward erratically from Monday through Wednesday, bringing heavier rain to northern and western regions and lighter showers further east. The BBC notes that the cooler air left behind by the rain will push daytime temperatures by mid-week to at or slightly below the seasonal average, with the possibility of frost in vulnerable locations during chilly nights.

Official Outlook and Seasonal Influences

The BBC’s outlook links the warmer and wetter-than-average conditions later in the season to a developing very strong El Niño in the Pacific. The Met Office projects that the UK remains on track for one of its warmest years on record, despite the imminent short-term cooling.
