History

Historical Context

West Indies captured the inaugural 1975 Cricket World Cup, beating Australia by 17 runs, and repeated the feat in 1979. The ICC’s quadrennial tournament, originally a 60-over, day-time event, set a legacy of Caribbean dominance. In 2024, West Indies mounted a substantial chase against India, signalling a revival that echoes their early World Cup triumphs.
