History

Historical Context

In August 1971 India and the Soviet Union signed a 20-year Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, committing $1 billion in military aid and securing Soviet backing for the Bangladesh war. The pact marked India’s shift from non-alignment toward a strategic partnership with Moscow. Today, Modi and Putin’s Valdai Club meeting revives that Cold-War link as they discuss a Ukraine cease-fire framework.
