History

Historical Context

After the 1998-2000 Eritrea-Ethiopia war killed roughly 70,000 people, the 12 December 2000 Algiers Agreement created a UN-monitored border and a temporary security zone. The 2026 federal seizure of Alula Aba Nega Airport in Mekelle revives those border tensions, prompting the African Union to cite the 2022 Pretoria peace pact as a warning against renewed clashes.
