History

Historical Context

News Corp’s bid for rugby-league broadcast rights triggered the mid-1990s Super League war, splitting 22 clubs into rival 1997 competitions. A peace deal on 23 September 1997 merged the ARL and Super League into the National Rugby League, reducing teams to 20 for 1998 and ending costly club closures. The merger’s contract controls now shape the Roosters’ NRLW perfect season and the Knights’ multi-million Dylan Brown deal.
