History

Historical Context

The 1999 Columbine High School massacre in Littleton, Colorado, where two students killed 13 people and wounded 24, shocked the nation. Federal investigators, including the FBI and Department of Justice, reported the shooters bought guns via illegal straw purchases costing about $1,200. Today's Baltimore incident mirrors Columbine's random gunfire during a community event, with Brandon M. Scott urging tips as victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The recurrence underscores persistent gaps in gun-control enforcement, prompting legislators in Maryland and the federal Congress to revisit background-check reforms.
