History

Historical Context

New York City’s early demand-management began with the nation’s first parking meter in 1935 and later expanded to a municipal permit system, a model reflected today in its 62,000 digital meters. The approach resurfaces in Philadelphia’s 2024 Parking Association Championship, where driver Mario “One-Shot Mar” Zucca won a $76 prize and spurred council debate on free-parking incentives.
